How I Lost My Client’s Movie Clips Unknowingly

The past few weeks have been difficult for me, as I am still trying to figure out what to do about a situation that has left me deeply unsettled.

I lost a drive that contained raw footages from a client’s project. I was supposed to edit the videos, but when the project was first handed over to me, the client wanted me to simply organize the clips and inform her about the available scenes. This was because she had already edited some parts with another editor.

After organizing the clips, I called her and asked her to come over and see the available scenes herself. Unfortunately, we couldn’t meet for a long time due to her tight schedule. Whenever she was free, I would be busy, and vice versa. This back-and-forth lasted for more than eight months.

A few months ago, I contacted her again, urging her to come and collect her clips. I explained that I needed to free up space on my drive for new projects, and since it seemed she was no longer serious about completing the edits, it was important to return her files. Still, she kept postponing the meeting, and by the time she was ready, I would be tied up with other work.

A few weeks ago, I decided to check my old drives, and to my greatest shock, I discovered that the drive containing all her videos was missing. I searched every possible place but couldn’t find it.

On Thursday, 24th April 2025, she called, requesting the clips. With a heavy heart, I opened up and explained everything I had been struggling with in the past weeks. She was visibly upset and told me she would call back later. Sadly, she had no backup of the videos before sending them to me.

Now, I am confused and uncertain about what will happen next if she decides to escalate the issue.
