Residents of Uburu-Ekwe Road in Ugwuagor Abakpa Nike, Enugu state, have welcomed what seems to be a sad moment in their area. One of their neighbours, Mr Eke Nweofia reportedly beat his pregnant wife to death after she was unable to prepare dinner before his return from work.
The Enugu state police arrested Mr Eke Nweofia after it was alleged that he killed his 8-months pregnant wife.
This ungodly event took place on Wednesday when the whole neighbourhood became rowdy following the breaking sad news.
Mr Eke is a supplier of scrap steel at Nkpor Road in Abakpa.
An eye witness, Mr Chibuike Ozor said that the 8-months pregnant woman already has 4 children. She was rushed to a closeby hospital immediately after the incident took place.
It was at the hospital that the doctors confirmed her sudden demise.
RECOMMEDED FICTIONAL STORIES
Ozor narrated that Mr Eke who got to his residence from work on Wednesday night demanded his meal.
His wife informed him that there was no food in the house. The only food available was already consumed by the kids.
The eyewitness also went ahead to reveal that the deceased went to one of her neighbours to borrow a bowl of garri which she used in feeding the kids earlier in the day.
Her husband did not give her money when he was leaving for work in the morning.
This response clearly got the husband offended and he pounced on her and beat her mercilessly.
Before neighbours could come for her rescue she had already collapsed.
They rushed her to the hospital on that Wednesday and it was in the early hours of Thursday that she was declared dead.
The Death of a pregnant wife
The eyewitness also narrated that Mr Eke has the behaviour of beating his wife at every slightest provocation.
He also recalled that when the deceased was 2-months pregnant, the husband would have taken her life that very day if not for their swift intervention.
Unfortunately, the woman who was supposed to give birth to her new baby by next month is now lying in the mortuary with her unborn child.
However, the Ugwuagor Vigilantes arrested the suspect and handed him over to the Enugu state police.
When contacted, the Chief Security Officer of the state police, Ikechukwu Ukwuani, confirmed the incident and poured out his sympathy to the family.
He also said that the suspect is currently in the state police station and will be taken to court in no distant time.
